Announcements: Nick Weber reported on the last UWSAC ( University of Wisconsin System Archives Committee) meeting. UWSAC will be streamlining their transfer system for sharing archival collections by making all requests web based in future. Also the Wisconsin Historical Society will be redefining their image which will include a new logo and an emphasis on their role as a mentoring agency.
Dennis Larsen discussed the next meeting of the ARMA Milwaukee Chapter which will be held November 8 at the Venice Club in Brookfield. The featured speaker will be Johannes Britz, PhD, Dean of the School of Information Studies at UWM. The December ARMA meeting will be the annual toys-for-tots dinner which will be held December 6 th from 5:00p.m.-7:00 p.m. at The Metro Hotel. The presentation by Michael Saethere is titled, CAT-5 Computing: A Hurricane Katrina Case Study in Disaster Recovery. Bill Fliss reminded the committee about the ceremony at Marquette on November 3 for the presentation of the 2005 Governor’s Archival Achievement Award to the Department of Special Collections and University Archives.
Business
Website Updates – Nick updated the committee about the Yahoo online discussion group at SEWAG-owner@yahoogroups.com
A discussion followed on finding a new host for the Archive email group list now at UWM. It was decided that this would no longer be needed if we make one more effort to reach all the contacts on our list and ask them to become a member by joining the Yahoo online discussion group. This will then give us our core email group of people interested in being members of SWAG. Nick will also set up a new account so there will be no confusion over marcus_the_red@hotmail and he will also change our acronym, SEWAG back to SWAG. We then discussed changes to the SWAG web site at http://uwp.edu/~webern/swag/swag.htm The Newsletter link will be removed until someone volunteers to write one. A link page will be added to link to such local groups as ARMA and members own institutional sites. Nick also asked if anyone would object to putting our meeting minutes on the site. No one objected.
Co-Chair Position - Nick asked for a volunteer to serve as his co-chair. Bill Fliss of Marquette kindly accepted the position.
Holiday Party – The group decided that it would be better to have a social event after the holidays. Michelle Sweetser and Stephanie Williams volunteered to come up with ideas for this event.
Continuing Education - A discussion followed about possible continuing education ideas for our next meeting. New members to the group suggested that anything on the “basics” would be helpful for them. It was also suggested that we contact any presenters from the SAA or MAC meetings who are local to see if they would offer their presentation again for us. Another possible program might be to ask SLIS students from UWM who are members of the student chapter of SAA to present their papers. A sub-committee was formed to look into all these possibilities and suggest a topic and presenter for the next meeting. Stephanie Williams, Wayne Jenkins, SCJ, Nick Weber, Sarah Shutkin and Ann McIntyre volunteered for this committee.
Next Meeting Date – May 23, 2006 at 1:00p.m. Room 301, Raynor Library, Marquette University. Judy Turner volunteered to take the minutes at the next meeting.
Presentation: Father Wayne gave an interesting presentation on the induction of
Fr. Henry Hogebach, SCJ to the South Dakota Hall of Fame and on his month long journey to India last July to consult and teach a course on records management and archives administration to the local SCJ community. More information on both these topics can be found at www.fridgenotes.org (click on Download the SCJ News – October).
