Next Meeting

Friday, October 29, 2004 at 11:00.  The room assignment will be emailed to everyone.

Fundraiser

LPH will be having a bake sale on Wednesday, October 27th in Molinaro and on Thursday, October 28th in Main Place from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, some of the proceeds from the bake sale will go to the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation.  The rest of the proceeds will help LPH fund its field trip later this semester.

If you would like to volunteer to purchase something to donate, you will receive an hour toward the service cord. If you decide to bake something, you will receive service hours for however long it takes you to make it.   To earn service hours, or to just help with the bake sale, you can work the table.  Any help would be greatly appreciated! So far we have some volunteers, but we still need someone to work the table on Thursday from

12-2.  Here is a list of volunteers thus far:

Field Trip

We discussed possible ideas for a field trip, but we haven’t decided on anything specific yet.  We know that we are going to the theater, but a specific theater, date, and time are still in the works.  Some possibilities are going to see Cabaret at the Skylight Opera.  Cabaret will be playing from November 26th -December 19th.  We also talked about going to the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre or to the Sunset Playhouse where To Kill aMockingbird is playing.  Further information as to times, dates, and prices will be sent to everyone through the listserve. Kate will post information about Sunset, AnnMarie already provided information about Skylight, which Wendy will post, and Wendy will post information for the Rep.

Workshops

LPH is considering having a workshop about GRE’s and Graduate School. If we do, we will coordinate with Career Planning and Placement so we do not just duplicate what they already offer.  We will definitely be having a workshop on PowerPoint on Friday, October 3rd at 11:00 a.m. taught by Bekah Garcia and Jenny Bremberger.  We will also be holding a workshop explaining what resumes are and how to write one.  This will be toward the end of November; details are still in the works. We will be integrating someone from a Human Resources Department at the alumni event, which we hope to co-sponsor with PAC (Parkside Association of Communicators) either in fall or spring.

Other Activities

LPH again will be sponsoring a coffee break, hopefully with other department honor societies, during the two weeks prior to finals (the week of the 6th and the 13th), where we offer coffee and some kind of snack like cookies or brownies in the alumni lounge of the library.  Any time volunteered to help will count toward your service hours.  We hope to offer a break for students who are working hard studying for finals at least one night each of those two weeks.  The Honors Program has already said that they will contribute $50. Ka will coordinate with the other disciplinary honors societies for time and funding.

Projects

Saturday, October 23rd is Make a Difference Day.  Volunteering whenever you can this day will count toward service hours.  Kate will send further information and ideas about possible places to volunteer to you on the listserve.

We also will be participating in a project called Treasures for Troops.  We will be collecting things such as socks, cotton balls, and Q-tips to make care packages to send to our troops overseas.  Each care package will have a letter attached to it letting our troops know that we are thinking of them.  We will spend the semester collecting these items, and they will be shipped around Christmas.  For every $5 that you spend on gifts, you will receive one service hour.  Time spent gathering items also counts towards service hours.  More details will be sent to you by Jessie, who gets credit for coming up with the idea, and who knows a recently returned soldier who has offered to provide addresses.

Respectfully submitted
Jenny Bremberger
