Workshops-are planned for every meeting we have left this semester.
**All workshops are open to all Communication Majors.

E-portfolio workshop on DEC 3rd (Tues. at 5:00) by Jennifer Ranker
She will show examples and why they are useful. Allison Fisher and Ray Swanson may come
in and show their e-portfolios too, if they are done. There will be a packet of information that
will explain what an e-portfolio is and what they are all about. So if you can't make the
meeting there will be a packet of information that you can get if you're interested.

Resume workshop on Nov 5th (Tues. at 3:30) and Nov 20th (Weds at 12:00) By Wendy
Leeds-Hurwitz.
*Anyone that wants to be involved in this workshop please give Wendy a resume the day
before the workshop; if you can't, come anyway.

Mentoring-
*We are mentoring freshman and sophomores who are majors or pending majors along with
really recent majors (late transfers).

After you receive the phone numbers of the people you will mentor from Wendy, you call
them and ask if they would like to be mentored. They do not know that we will be calling
them or anything about having a person mentor them because we just decided to do this. All
new majors will get a note from the department chair warning them of this program. We will
have to explain what we are doing and ask if they would like to be involved.

*Here are some questions or topics that we though would be helpful to talk about.

1) Meet with an advisor from your major. If you have more than one major then you need to
see an advisor from each department. Even if it is a minor or a certificate you should still see
an advisor from that department.

2) Make sure they understand the university requirements (Wendy passed out a cheat-sheet
that I placed as an attachment). Tell them to keep a catalog of every year that they declare
anything (major, minor or certificate), and the year they enter the university (for BOK). You
can always move up a catalog year but you can't move back.

3) Declare as soon as you think your interested in a major, minor or certificate, in case the
requirements change.

4) Talk about the classes they will need to take. Also answer questions they may have about
certain classes or teacher. Share your experiences about the courses outside the major as well
as inside the major.

5) Talk about being in clubs and how they help you to talk and get to know more people in
the major.

6) Let them know about the internships available and how all the students that do an
internship recommend them to future students because they help in getting a job.

7) Tell them about summer school. Explain that the classes may be shorter in the amount of
weeks but the workload for each week in higher then a regular semester long class. If you take
an eight week summer school class the work load will be doubled per day. If you take a four
week class then the workload is four times as much per day compared to a normal semester
long class.

8) Tell them to save all of their work from Communication courses for senior seminar!! (It will
save you from doing extra work)

*At the end of the meeting, people were given students to mentor. Everyone else please
contact Wendy to get your students to mentor.

Next meeting-Nov 5th (Tues. at 3:30)

Meeting ended 6:00 p.m.
