Wednesday, January 26, 2005 Meeting timeWe will meet Wednesdays at 5 pm every other week this semester. Members should check emails for additional information about events. Jessie Noblin was elected secretary at the last meeting. As Jessie could not come today, Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz took minutes. We postponed the election of treasurer until such time as we could confirm that one of the candidates can attend the meetings. Kate Bieringer will be acting treasurer until we elect someone to the position. Treasures for TroopsMembers spent two days getting donations to Mailboxes, and they are mailing approximately 8 boxes to soldiers in Iraq for us. They are paying the costs of packing and shipping materials, but we will be fundraising to cover the postage, which is likely to be $400-450. Jessie has already raised about half that. Ka Her, as president, will send thank yous to Jessie and Trisha Burns for them to share with their church groups, which contributed donations to our project, as well as to the Ranger News and The Journal. Fundraisers We discussed possible fundraisers. Boston Store has a community day February 26 - we sell coupons for $5 to shoppers who then use the coupon for $5 toward merchandise at Boston Store on that day. Ka is checking some details and then will circulate the documentation to members. We will do one bake sale - Rebecca Rydzenski agreed to bake and Kate agreed to work (along with others to be determined later). Ka will get us a date. Kim Maika knows of a possibility of soliciting for donations for mailing costs where she works and will check that. We decided that a spaghetti or pizza dinner causes problems with food service rules on campus. Workshops Ka received information from GREs - they will do workshops on strategies and graduate school admission and pre-GRE tests. She will check whether Career Planning and Placement is already organizing anything with them for the semester. It is possible to have 495 students do a PowerPoint workshop, as some did last fall, for other majors. Wendy will ask if there is interest in her section. Fieldtrip We are discussing organizing a trip to Ringside Sports in Gurnee on Feb 13 with PAC. We also might organize a trip to support Jessie Noblin, who is working on organizing it. Alumni event We expect to organize an alumni event this spring with PAC - probably late March. Since Chris Dollar is President of PAC he will serve as liaison. Student celebration The LPH initiation is part of the Communication Department's student celebration each spring. The tentative date is April 17, 2-4 pm. Stephanie Glass will be the intern working on this with Kate, in her role as Vice President. Graduation party There was interest expressed in having a party for graduating seniors at the end of the semester. LPH is already talking about doing so many events, it is not feasible to do this as well. Various students will followup with the two sections of 495 to see if there is interest in organizing this. Respectfully submitted
