Meeting Minutes

2.17.2003 Minutes

I. Officer Elections.
We needed to elect a new secretary and treasurer, to replace students who graduated in December. The current officers for Spring 2003 are as follows: President - Rebecca Williamson, Vice President - Jenny Ranker, Treasurer - Dena Davis, and Secretary - Jenny Drake.

II. Service Project.
Last semester LPH members decided to mentor newly declared majors as their service project For the year. Members who are willing to participate this semester will answer questions and provide the new majors with any important information regarding advisors, classes, teachers, and expectations. Wendy will give an overview of the mentor process at our next meeting. Megan, Luke, Rebecca, and Pam volunteered to go into the COMM 107 and 108 classes to announce this mentor opportunity. Ray volunteered to make flyers regarding when this event
will take place.

III. Workshops.
We discussed whether we wanted to conduct workshops this semester and, if so, on what Topics. Decision: There will be a resume writing workshop later in the semester. Luke is looking into the possibility of inviting recent-graduate Martha King to facilitate the workshop, since she does this professionally now.

IV. Special Events
In process is the planning for an Alumni Event to include career-related guest speakers. All Communication students, faculty, staff, and many alumni will be invited to attend. This event is to be held at either the Fireside or Brew Masters on either April 11 or April 18. Jenny Ranker will keep us informed on the details as they are made.

V. Membership.
Please be sure to get your membership dues and gold cord fees to Dena as soon as possible. Prices: New member $30, Renewal $15/year, Gold cords for graduating seniors $8 (it is possible to pay for gold cords ahead of time).

VI. Fieldtrip.
It was decided that our fieldtrip this semester will be to Milwaukee. The tentative plan is to tour Harley-Davidson (possibly speak with someone from Marketing, Advertising, HR), go out to dinner, and end with a play at the Rep. Jenny Ranker is getting information together and will keep us informed on dates, times, and other details. The fieldtrip is tentatively planned for early April.

VII. LPH Initiation.
Communication majors/students, graduating seniors, and LPH/PAC officers will be acknowledged at a department sponsored celebration, which will include the LPH initiation. Conflict certificates, Mediation certificates, and LPH pins will be handed out at this time. Tickets will need to be purchased for a minimal cost as there will also be a meal included. Friends and family are strongly encouraged to attend this event.

The tentative date for this event is April 13. An invitation and program will need to be created for this event. Megan volunteered to take on responsibility for the event planning portion of this ceremony as a one credit internship.

VIII. Next Meeting.
The next LPH meeting will be on Monday, March 3 at Noon in room CA 233. We will stay with the Monday at noon meeting time since it works best for most of the students.

Hope to see you all there!
Jennifer Drake, Secretary
