3.3.03 Minutes

I. ALUMNI EVENT

The date for the Communication student and alumni event has been scheduled for Friday, April 18 at Casa Capri. The appetizers will be served at 6pm and the panel will begin at 7 pm. Informal socializing will follow. Jen Gatzke is checking with alumni members to see who can attend and what they will be discussing. Ray has volunteered to design the flyers and invitations. Please tell other students in your classes about this event and encourage them to attend.

(Casa Capri is located at the corner of 22nd Ave & Birch Rd in Kenosha). This event is free, courtesy of
LPH and PAC which are splitting the cost of the food and room rental.

II. MENTORING SERVICE PROJECT

Megan, Luke, Pam and Rebecca have volunteered to speak to the COMM 107 and 108 classes about the opportunity to receive mentoring from LPH members. If you would like to be a mentor to new Communication majors and haven't signed up yet, please let Wendy know so she can add you to the list. We would like to applaud Ray on creating a magnificent flyer for the COMM 107 & 108 students to sign up on if they're interested in receiving mentor assistance. Great job!

III. LPH INITIATION

Our initiation will occur as part of the department's student celebration, on Sunday, April 13. Certificates
will be given to LPH members and conflict students who have completed their program. For the first time,
PAC will have awards from students for students this year. Watch for an e-mail asking for your nominations. Also, graduating seniors will be acknowledged for the first time. And the faculty is developing several awards for students. Dinner will be served at 6pm with the ceremony beginning at 7pm. Megan has completed a rough draft of the invitation and will keep us informed of her new changes. Tickets will cost approximately $12/person to cover the cost of the meal, plus a donation to the department's scholarship fund. Don't forget to tell your friends and family about this event as you will want them to see you recognized! All students in the department are invited to attend.

IV. RESUME WORKSHOP

Luke is in the process of getting in touch with Martha King to see if she can facilitate the workshop. She does a great job and we would love for her to come help us out.

V. FIELD TRIP

Jenny Ranker and Jen Gatzke have been working on details of the proposed field trip. Here's what they are working out. Please let Wendy know if you can participate by one week from today (3/11) so we can buy tickets and make reservations.

Friday, April 4:

2:00 probable departure time from UWP: (what we usually do is car pool from campus, but if anyone will already be in Milwaukee, they can just meet us there)
3:00 likely tour at Harley Davidson (yet to be confirmed).
5:00 dinner at the African Hut (to try very different food, but near where we'll be, and reasonable - should be under $10/person - Wendy has eaten there and said it was really good).
6:30 Annie Jurcyk, the Public Relations manager at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, will talk to students about what she does, internships, and answer questions.
7:15 "Rep in depth" - discussion about the play we'll see that night with the actors.
8:00 opening night of The Mill on the Floss at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater - tickets will be $10-13 depending on how many we need and where we sit.

VI. MENTORING WORKSHOP

Wendy spent time discussing what topics we should be covering with our new majors. Some important items include: get the COMM - new major handbook and department brochure from CA 265, keep all of your COMM work, meet with your advisor, and get involved with COMM clubs and organizations. If you missed the meeting, see Wendy for a couple of handouts to assist you in your mentoring. All of us could use a little refresher course on a few facets of the COMM major.

VII. NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be on 3.24.2003 at noon in room CA 143 to finalize details of our events this
semester. See you there!
