9.22.03 MINUTES
I. OLD BUSINESS (FEES, ETC.)
Fees for joining and renewing your LPH membership are due on October 17,
2003. The fee for new members is $30.00, and for returning members it
is $15.00. If you are a graduating Senior and a member of LPH, be sure
to pay your $8.00 gold cord fee as well. Please make your checks payable
to UW-Parkside, and give them to Luke Andersen, or any other LPH officer
to be submitted on time.
II. NOTIFICATION OF NEW MEMBERS
Letters have gone out to all eligible Communication students. If you have
been notified and wish to join, please pay the $30.00 fee by October 17,
and join us at our next meeting in CART 133, on Monday, October 6th.
III. MENTORING PROJECT
A sign-up sheet was passed around the room for any members who wished
to be on a contact list for mentoring new Communication Majors. It was
decided that any students who wished to be mentored would contact the
LPH members on the mentoring list. If this process works, then the original
idea of doing a mentoring booth will not be needed.
IV. SERVICE PROJECT
In order to obtain a red and white cord along with the original LPH gold
cord, it was decided that you must do at least 10 hours of volunteer work
over the course of a calendar year. These 10 hours cannot coincide with
any course requirements, such as the Senior Seminar project. Students
may do whatever service they feel passionate about. Wendy offered to put
up a separate page on the LPH website about different volunteering opportunities
in the area. Ray Swanson also offered to design a form to log hours at
volunteer sites. The red and white cord will be funded by LPH as a reward
for service to the community. Not only will it be nice to have two cords
to wear at graduation, it will also be extremely beneficial to put volunteer
work on your resume.
V. FIELD TRIP
Chicago will be the destination of our field trip for this semester. However,
it has not been decided exactly where we will be going. There have been
a few suggestions: tours at a Chicago news station, radio stations, and
museum promotions departments. A few members will be looking into different
connections at both WBBM and WLS. The trip is tentatively scheduled for
early November on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. The group will be taking
the train downtown, as well as going to a "different" restaurant
for dinner. The restaurant will be chosen after we find out exactly where
we are going. Also, it was suggested that we do a fundraiser to offset
the cost of the field trip. A possible fundraiser may be a "Bowl-a-Thon."
More details about this fundraiser will be discussed in upcoming meetings.
VI. WORKSHOPS
Since no one is planning on going to graduate school, the idea of bringing
a Kaplan Representative was eliminated. However, members seemed interested
in another E-portfolio workshop, as well as a possible video production
session with Professor Katherine Gregory. The idea for an "Internship
Day" also interested members. This would be an informational session
for students who are thinking about doing an internship. They could come
see what other students have done in the past, and get an idea of what
the course entails from Professor Theresa Castor.
VII. CONCLUSION
The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 6, 2003 in CART 133.
Please join us to discuss the upcoming exciting events we are planning
for this semester.
Respectfully Submitted,
Kathryn Seamans, Secretary
