The UW-Parkside Computer Science Department
Where People and Computing Meet
What our graduates are saying:
Those who work at the forefront of information technology have the opportunity to interact with interesting people and solve challenging problems. You can start on this fast-moving and important career path by choosing a Computer Science major.
Where We Excel:
Dedicated laboratory facilities; high placement rate; challenging course work; practical internships – these are just a few of the reasons to study computer science (CS) at UW-Parkside. The CS Department offers a wide range of courses in computing software, hardware, and theory taught by an enthusiastic and energetic faculty. As a CS student, you’ll work closely with faculty and fellow students exploring key technologies and practices in preparation for a rewarding career. CS graduates have consistently rated among the top of all UW-Parkside majors for starting salaries and job placement.
The CS Department Offers You:
Comprehensive Degrees and Certificates
In addition to the CS major, we offer certificate programs in World Wide Web Publishing and UNIX System Administration. You can also pursue a double major in CS and mathematics or a concentration in computer engineering within the CS program. If you already have an undergraduate degree, our master of science program in computer and information systems can help you gain additional knowledge and experience toward meeting your career goals.
Day and Evening Classes
Our flexible class schedule fits your lifestyle. Take daytime classes as a full-time student or, if you work or have other obligations, finish the CS major as a part-time student in the evening. Our long-range schedule will help you establish a plan for degree completion at a pace that is right for you.
A Dedicated Computer Science Laboratory
The CS laboratory is your “home away from home.” Open only to CS students, the lab is the center of your activities for scheduled laboratory sessions, project work, or socializing with your CS classmates. Remote access is available 24/7.
Knowledgeable and Creative Faculty
The CS faculty has extensive experience in industry and research, giving you opportunities to be successful in your course work and your career.
Small Class Sizes
Class sizes are small enough to offer you individual attention and for you to get to know your classmates.
Internships with Regional Employers
Many CS students engage in internships with employers in the region, including SC Johnson, Harley-Davidson, Northwestern Mutual, Briggs and Stratton, and Cardinal Health.
Software Engineering Projects
In the capstone two-semester software engineering course, you will work on a team project to develop a real-world application, often for an off-campus client.
Experiences Outside Computer Science
We have established collaborations with faculty and students in management information systems (MIS) and bioinformatics and with technical personnel from businesses in our region that can enhance your learning and career opportunities.
Programming Contests
Teams from UW-Parkside regularly participate in regional and national programming contests, including the annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. UW-Parkside teams have developed a reputation for success, and the 2001 team advanced to the ICPC World Finals in Hawaii.
Cybersecurity Initiatives
We are one of six UW System campuses forming the Wisconsin Cybersecurity Initiative, through which we will expand our presence in information security education and research.
Preparation for Graduate Studies
Interested in research or postgraduate education? The CS program will prepare you for graduate studies in computer and information systems, computer science, or related fields.
