The UW-Parkside Economics Department
What can I do with an economics major?
Economics teaches you analytical and problem-solving skills that are invaluable in many different professions. You can work for the private or public sector – for businesses, government, or nonprofit organizations.
Many of our graduates are working in management positions in banking, insurance, marketing and economic modeling or forecasting.
- You will gain knowledge of markets and insight into growth and decline in different areas of the economy.
- You will understand how to apply cost-benefit analysis to a variety of situations.
- You will develop good decision-making and budgeting skills.
- You will acquire a broad and global perspective.
- You will learn statistical and econometric skills that employers can use.
The Economics Program
The economics major has two tracks:
A General Major: suitable for most students.
A Quantitative Track: for students who are interested in economic modeling.
The core courses can be used in a variety of other majors and programs (and for General Education). Experienced, full-time faculty teach all courses in the major.
Evening classes are offered every semester.
Economics is an excellent complement to another major, and it is the most flexible major for students going on to graduate school – in law, business, public policy, and many other areas.
“The practical value of economics is that it makes sense of the world around you more than any discipline; it is the basis of our lives. In our daily lives, we take for granted the purchases we make as a consumer, and the decisions businesses and our government make as simply things that happen ... just because. After completing an economics major from UW-Parkside, I truly comprehend that there is no ‘just because.’ Most decisions made on a daily basis, be they by the individual, the business, or the government, all have a sound basis in economic theory.”
