The UW-Parkside English Department
Welcome to the English Department
The English Department has designed its program to suit the needs of both traditional and nontraditional-age students and their varied career goals. The three concentrations offer solid education in literature and communication while also emphasizing distinct areas of expertise. The standard major is geared to students who plan further graduate or professional study, or literary careers, with in-depth study of British and American literature. The writing concentration is designed for students who envision careers in writing, business, industry, or public service, with a focus on sharpening communication skills. The language arts concentration is concerned with the needs of education professionals and fulfills the state of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction requirements for teacher training. It is also designed for students interested in linguistics and language study.

General Commentary
The English Department offerings cover the entire spectrum of English and American literatures, including courses on women’s literature, gay and lesbian literature, and world literature.
Taught by experienced teachers – many of whom are winners of university, state, and national teaching awards, and authors of fiction, poetry, essays and literary works – English Department courses are small enough to allow spirited student participation. Students also have opportunities to develop independent study courses and internships working closely with professors and people in the field.
The English Department sponsors an active chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors Society, and it sponsors an annual Undergraduate Literary Conference.
