The UW-Parkside Mathematics Department
The Language of Science
Mathematics is of central importance in the sciences. In fact, mathematics has been called the language of science. This applies not only to the physical and biological sciences, but increasingly to the social, managerial, and behavioral sciences as well. Much of mathematics has been developed to meet the needs of the areas of human knowledge that it serves.
In addition to its service role in other areas, mathematics occupies a place of its own in our intellectual heritage. From ancient Greece to our own times, people have been drawn to the elegant structure and the fascinating problems of mathematics.
The Keys to Our Success:
- Ideal Location: Conveniently located just off the I-94 corridor, which connects UW-Parkside to Chicago and Milwaukee. Chicago’s Loop and O’Hare International Airport are about an hour’s drive south and downtown Milwaukee and General Mitchell International Airport are approximately 45 minutes north.
- Comprehensive Degrees & Concentrations: The undergraduate major in Mathematics includes options in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and teaching mathematics in elementary and secondary schools.
- Professional Educators: Faculty members are nationally and internationally known and engage in research in both pure and applied mathematics. These faculty members are available on a one-to-one basis to work with students and are involved in creative activities.
- Optimal Size: Big enough to provide great education and professional opportunities, yet small enough to deliver the personal attention and guidance you need and deserve. All undergraduate courses are taught by full-time university faculty members with Ph.D. degrees and by staff, not by teaching assistants. This makes UW-Parkside an ideal university to study mathematics at the undergraduate level.
- Graduate Success: Our graduates are going on to graduate schools for master and Ph.D. degrees in math and related science fields. They are working for industry in a variety of fields around the country such as actuaries, operations researchers, and computer programmers. They are also teaching in colleges, secondary and elementary schools.
- State of the Art Facilities: Fully equipped computer labs and state-of-the-art classrooms with central computer screens.
- Affordable Education & Scholarships: UW-Parkside is one of the "best deals" in the highly acclaimed UW System. Generous grants, academic and talent scholarships, and work-study programs are available.
- An Active Math Club: Pi Mu Epsilon (Wisconsin Gamma Chapter).
