Stand Out Student at UW-Parkside

Joe Mitchell

High School: Shorewood High School, Shorewood Wis.
Major: Pre-Med
Scholarships: 2008-2009 UW-Parkside Future Leaders Scholarship; 2009-2010 Milos Pre-Health Scholarship

Sometimes the game changes. Joe Mitchell had an outstanding career as a basketball player at Shorewood High School on the north side of Milwaukee. His love of the game brought him to UW-Parkside—the only NCAA Division II university in Wisconsin. Then he began to discover his talent in medicine.

"I came to UW-Parkside as an athlete," Joe says. "After realizing my potential in medicine, I remained at Parkside because of the strength of the pre-med program."

In addition to his work on the basketball court, in the classroom and in the lab, Joe volunteered at Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee.

"Parkside is a place where students can receive a great education without the distractions of a major university," Joe says. "Professors are accessible and genuinely care about their students."

And what did Joe enjoy most about his UW-Parkside experience? "The people that I've had the pleasure to call classmates and professors," he says.

As all great ones do, Joe is taking his game to a new level. Of the prestigious institutions at which he has been accepted, Joe plans to attend the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health—confident that UW-Parkside has prepared him to succeed.
