GAO Alumna Spotlight

A Member's Involvement does not stop after graduation, a Gamma's Job is NEVER done...

Interview with GAO Alumna, : Nina~Moxie~Brown

Date crossed: August 12, 2004

What is your fondest GAO memory? The alumna ceremony at Maria B's sister's house

How has your involvement with Gamma helped you prepare for the "real world"? It's taught me how to deal with stressful situations in a professional manner. How to multi task and handle fifteen thousand different situations all at once. It's given me experience in event/program planning and coordination. It's also given me good insight to the inner workings of business structure and how to move around and within this structure to get your specific agenda accomplished.

What are you doing now? I am currently a 2nd year graduate student at The George Washington Univeristy in Washington D.C. I am working on my Master's if Public Health with a specialty in Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC). I am a graduate assistant for the Mid Atlantic Public Health Training Center (MAPHTC) as well as a graduate assistant for Health Information Partners (HIPS). I just started my field placement with NMAC, the National Minority AIDS Council and will be working on a collaboration between them and the National AIDS Housing Coalition to look at secondary affect of HIV/AIDS specifically in the area of housing. I also waitress on the weekends at a Korean restaurant called Mandu.

How do you continue to stay involved with GAO? Honestly this is difficult being so far away from all my sisters, but I try to stay updated on chapter events, proof read letters as asked, answer questions, and just be a support to the active house in any way I can. And I try to wear my letters even though we're not on the East Coast yet. ;) (You see I said YET. )

What type of advice would you have for the undgrad? The cliche, it's only as good as you make it, is TRUE TRUE TRUE. This doesn't just apply for GAO but for your entire college career. Get involved, do things that you wouldn't normally consider doing, do things that scare you to death, do things that will help you grow and learn more about yourself, and NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK. Although it seems never ending, those four years (five for me lol) fly by fast so don't waste the opportunity that college gives you.

What is your favorite food? SUSHI!!!!!, and Spaghetti and Greens

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I don't really have spare time, but I would say travel, read, explore other cultures

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would go to Ghana. Hopefully I'll get there by next year

What is your dream job? This is a hard one. I guess my simple answer would be working as a clinician in a community health center but my real answer would be anything that directly involves me in the community where I can facilitate, inspire, and motivate change from the grassroots level up. An environment where I love what I do, and I'm surrounded by those that I love. That whatever my job is, I know that my life made a difference and most importantly that my job will fulfill my life's quote "When our eyes see our hands doing the work of our hearts, the circle of Creation is completed inside us, the doors of our souls fly open and love steps forth to heal everything in sight." ~Michael Bridge
