University of Wisconsin-Parkside Economics Professor Norm Cloutier presents the Election Experience program "Trick or Treat? What are the recent Labor Market Data Telling Us?" The lecture is on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at noon in the Hickory Room of the Student Center. Cloutier, who also serves as Director of the university's Center for Economic Education, said while the official unemployment rate in September was 7.8 percent, a recent political ad claimed that the "real" unemployment rate is nearly 19%, and some political commentators have suggested the recent employment statistics were fabricated, while others claim they are a signal of continued recovery. All presidential election outcomes are influenced by the state of the economy and the prospects for the American worker. "The intent of this presentation is to review some basic measures of labor market performance and offer some historical perspective on our most recent recession and current conditions," Cloutier said. "Understanding these measures and the economic forces that shape their values is critical to your own your evaluation of political rhetoric on the economy." Admission is free.
