Bracketed by a 16-hour trip there and a 23-hour blizzard marred ride home, the Parkside American Marketing Association (PAMA) trip to the AMA's International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans was "a roaring success." Business Dept. Interim Co-Chair Dr. Peter Knight said PAMA members Maria Acuna, Gina Cairo, Will Cray, Janeth Evangelista, Julie Evans, Josh Frazier, Matt Harmon, Kristine Perez, Stephanie VanDerBunt, and Kevin Schuirmann were "outstanding CBEC and UW-Parkside ambassadors" at the March 21-23 gathering in The Big Easy. Cray and VanDerBunt placed fourth among 100 elite entrants in the Northwestern Mutual Sales Competition, the 18th award CBEC students have won at national competitions since 2009.
UW-Parkside graduate, PAMA member, and current Marketing Special Project Associate Julie Evans picks up the narrative on the conference's first day:
"Thursday morning?we had 6 of our 10 members compete in the SABRE Business Simulation. The other four members set up our Collegiate Chapter Exhibit which was judged later that afternoon and presented to the other students in trade show fashion that evening. After dinner, we participated in a social scramble and t-shirt exchange with the other 1,200 students in attendance. The keynote address was titled 'Run the Gauntlet of Change' by Jeffrey Hayzlett, once chief marketing officer of Kodak, now a global business celebrity and bestselling author. Everyone at the address received a free copy of his book "Running the Gauntlet," and most of our members have already connected with him on LinkedIn.
"Friday, we had two of our members compete in the Marketing Strategy Competition. The rest of us had the choice of several breakout sessions. We attended presentations by brand directors at Bacardi USA and chief visionary officers of Social Media Energy. We attended a Career Fair Luncheon and afterwards had a chance to speak with other collegiate chapters about enhancing professional development, membership, recruitment, and retention.
"Saturday, two of our members competed in the Northwestern Mutual Sales Competition. The rest of us had the choice of several breakout sessions including "Is Your Resume Ready or Not?" and "About to Graduate, What's Next?" Saturday night was the awards banquet, where we were ecstatic to find out that Will Cray and Stephanie VanDerBunt had placed 4th in the Northwestern Mutual Sales Competition. After the awards banquet, we were able to explore New Orleans."Overall, we had a great time. We were able to network and make connections for our chapter moving forward."
