Institute of Professional Educator Development
A new K-12 educator certification program launches in the fall of 2013 in the redesigned Institute of Professional Educator Development (IPED). IPED also has extensive offerings for ongoing professional development of licensed educators, such as the annual Chiwaukee Academy.
The Social Sciences Kaleidoscope
The Social Sciences Kaleidoscope (SSK) will be a web portal for social media channels students maintain to discuss what they are learning and researching in the social sciences. A call went out in the fall 2013 semester for students to participate in the spring 2014 semester, and two student projects were selected; each student will receive a $400 stipend for participating. A new University of Wisconsin-Parkside website is being developed that will have a dedicated SSK page, but the students are already working on their projects, which can be directly accessed. Jenn Zentmyer is using a Tumblr to examine her experiences in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) certificate program (http://scientistjz.tumblr.com), and Manvinder Singh is using a Facebook page to engage the public in facts he is learning in his Victimology class as a Criminal Justice Major (https://www.facebook.com/manny.singh.374549).
Dispatches From a New Dean Blog
Dean Jacobs is chronicling his first year as a Dean in a blog on The Society Pages, a website designed to make social science more accessible to the general public. In Dispatches From a New Dean Walt is applying his view of academic leadership as both a science and an art: Important considerations for decision making cannot be completely captured in a spreadsheet when balancing compliance with changing financial/organizational realities, fidelity to tradition, established best practices, and a commitment to innovation.
