Welcome to the College of Social Sciences & Professional Studies! I am honored to serve as the Founding Dean. We have wonderful students, staff, and faculty, and we will be working hard to create a College that will make everyone proud.
I came to UW-Parkside from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where I was the Chairperson of the Department of African American & African Studies for five years. I received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology from Indiana University. My current research explores personal and social possibilities of undergraduate students' generation of creative digital nonfiction (see "The Pedagogy of Digital Storytelling in the College Classroom" as an example). In the 2013-2014 year I am living on campus and serving as the “Dean in Residence” for the University’s Exploration Living-Learning Community.
The Office of the Dean includes one 50% time Associate Dean. The Associate Dean works closely with the Dean to manage the College, and is selected from the ranks of the tenured faculty. Associate Professor Jeffrey Alexander is serving as the Interim Associate Dean for the 2013-2014 academic year. In addition to playing a key role in getting the new College up and running, Jeff will help create the structure for the regular Associate Dean position to begin in the summer of 2014. Jeff is a scholar of Japanese history, and in the summer of 2013 he took students to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. Brewed in Japan is his latest book.
A full-time Dean’s Assistant completes the team in the Office of the Dean. The Dean’s Assistant manages most of the daily administrative tasks necessary for smooth operation of the College. The inaugural Dean’s Assistant is Vivian Williams, who joined the University of Wisconsin-Parkside after seven years as a clinical services assistant at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. Vivian also has a Master of Science degree in education, and served in the United States Air Force.
We would love to speak with you about our ideas for creating a vibrant College. Call (262.595.3001), email (CSSPSDean@uwp.edu), or stop by the office (Molinaro Hall room 364). The Office of the Dean team and I look forward to speaking with you!
