Supporting Student Excellence

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside offers many programs and initiatives which support and promote our students' academic excellence. Among them are:

• Academic Honor Societies: Honor societies are dedicated to the recognition and promotion of academic excellence in various disciplines. Academic honor societies currently chartered at UW-Parkside are:
  
  
  • Phi Alpha Theta (Omega Mu Chapter), National Honor Society in History, chartered in 1980.
  • Psi Chi (chartered 1986), National Honorary Society in Psychology
  • Kappa Delta Pi (Rho Omicron Chapter, chartered 1988), International Honor Society in Education.
  • Lambda Pi Eta (Gamma Pi Chapter, chartered 1994), Communication Honor Society
  • Beta Gamma Sigma, (Chapter 393, chartered 2003) International Honor Society in Business
  • Phi Eta Sigma (chartered 2003), recognizes academic achievements by students during their first year of study.
  • Sigma Tau Delta, National Honor Society in English (Tau Psi Chapter)
  • Sigma Gamma Epsilon, National Honor Society for the Earth Sciences (chartered in 2006).
  
  
  
• Academic Recognition:
  
  
  • Academic Achievement Awards, established in 1972, are distributed at a formal reception to academically strong and achieving seniors.
    
    
  • Academic All-American, students participating in Intercollegiate Athletics may be selected as an Academic All-American according to the time lines and procedures established by the Coaching Association associated with that sport.
  
  
  • Dean's List: Established in 1975, the list includes all undergraduate students who earn a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.79 on a load of 9 or more credits during either the Fall or Spring semesters.
    
    
  • Departmental Honors:
    
    
    • Business Honors: Students who major in business management or management information systems and who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or greater in all upper-level business management course work and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better will be graduated with honors.
    • Chemistry Honors: To be eligible for a B.S. with honors in chemistry, a chemistry major must attain a GPA of 3.25 or better in all chemistry courses taken, complete a senior thesis (CHEM 497) and defend it before a committee of three faculty members, at least two of whom are from chemistry. In addition, an overall GPA of at least 3.00 must be attained.
    
    
  • Provost's List: (established in 2004)The list includes all students who earn a Fall or Spring semester GPA of at least 3.80, based upon a load of 9 credits or more excluding courses which do not count toward graduation
    
    
  • Graduation with Honors: UW-Parkside uses traditional Latin terms in recording the following distinctions:
  • Cum laude: Cumulative GPA of 3.50 - 3.69
  • Magna cum laude: Cumulative GPA between 3.70 and 3.89
  • Summa cum laude: Cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher.
  
  
  
  • Chancellor's Award: The University's highest student honor, awarded at commencement.
  
  
  
  • Outstanding Graduate Awards have been awarded at commencement ceremonies since 1971.

• Honors Program, established 1995, the program encourages, rewards and celebrates academic excellence.



• Leadership Opportunities:
• Chancellor's Leadership Institute, established in 2001, is a unique leadership opportunity provided to the presidents and vice presidents of major status organizations.
• Leadership Scholarship: The Student Activities Office offers two $800 Leadership Scholarships to current undergraduate student leaders intending to continue at UW-Parkside.
• Leadership Certificate:The program is designed to equip UW-Parkside students with an understanding of leadership and the skills essential for being a successful leader in the 21st century.
• Student Involvement Record: Use the SIR to track your participation outside the classroom while at UW-Parkside. The SIR is helpful in tracking leadership activities, honors, awards, recognitions, memberships, and off-campus involvement.




• Scholarships: Through generous gifts from alumni and friends of the university, UW-Parkside was able to award 168 scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year.



• Study Abroad Program: The Center for International Studies collaborates with the Financial Aid Office to assist students in financing their study abroad by offering travel grants to eligible students. In the past, students have studied in Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Sweden.
