PROBATION, STRICT PROBATION, SUSPENSION
First semester freshmen begin their college careers in good standing. To remain in good standing a student must obtain a 2.0 grade point average in all classes taken every semester including summer session. Students who fail to maintain the minimum requirement will be automatically placed on probation, or suspension.
Students can determine their academic standing at the end of each semester by following this process:
A student in GOOD STANDING who... fails to receive a semester grade point average of at leas a 2.0, but receives a 1.0 or higher is placed on PROBATION, or earns lower than a 1.0 grade point average for the semester, is placed on STRICT PROBATION.
A student on PROBATION who... fails to receive a grade point average of at least a 2.0, but receives a 1.5 or higher is placed on STRICT PROBATION, or earns lower than a 1.50 grade point average for the semester, will be SUSPENDED for at least one year.
A student on STRICT PROBATION... must obtain a semester grade point average of at least a 2.0 or they will be SUSPENDED for at least one year.
A student on probation or strict probation will be automatically restored to good standing at the end of the semester when:
the student's semester grade point average is a 2.0 or better on any number of credits, and the cumulative grade point average is a 2.0 or better, and there are no incompletes for the semester
May I appeal my suspension?
Yes, a student who has been suspended may submit a written appeal to the Academic Actions Committee. Information about the appeal process is available in the Advising Center.
While suspended may I attend another school?
Your chance of being admitted to another university or college is slim. It might be a good idea to register for classes at a technical or community college. You should consult with the Admissions Office at the school you intend to apply.
Do I automatically get readmitted if I sit out a year?
No, you must appeal your suspension.
CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE (G.P.A.)
At UW-Parkside each letter grade carries a certain number of quality points per credit. A grade of "B", for example, is worth three quality points per credit, so that a student receiving a "B" in a three credit course would have earned a total of nine quality points. The G.P.A. is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of credits attempted.
