A letter of application/cover letter is written as a direct response about a specific position which has been advertised; therefore your letter is written with a specific focus.

OPENING PARAGRAPH.  Indicate which position you desire in one-two sentences.

MIDDLE PARAGRAPH.  Why should they consider you?  What do you have to offer?  Discuss how your skills specifically relate to the position requirements.  Can be two paragraphs; preferably one.

COVER LETTER WRITING TIPS

  1. Always address your letter to a specific individual with his/her correct title and business address.
  2. Tailor your letter to the needs of the company and requirements of the position.  Include specific examples or facts.
  3. Organize your information for the reader; write clearly and simply.  Avoid jargon and overly complex sentences.
  4. Use active voice and action verbs in your writing; vary sentence structure and length.
  5. Be positive in content, tone, word choice and expectations.  Convey confidence; avoid “I hope, I think”.
  6. Produce error-free, clean copy on laser printer.  Don’t depend on spell-check!
  7. Use high-quality stationery and envelopes.
  8. Keep the letter to one page.  Avoid repeating contents of resume; add new information.
  9. Be timely.  Send your letter and resume as soon as you are aware of the potential opportunity.  Meet all stated deadlines.
