References

References are often requested as part of the employment process.  While it is not necessary to put “references furnished upon request” on your resume, you should prepare a separate sheet with your references listed.

SELECTING REFERENCES

You will want to ask (in person) three to five people who will be able to comment on your work-related qualifications.  Share a copy of your current resume with these individuals and discuss your career goals so they are as informed as possible about your job search.  If it is not clear what the individual’s connection is to you, please indicate (i.e., former supervisor).  Occasionally, specific types of references will be asked for, but usually past employers or supervisors and faculty members are most appropriate.

Ask each person for contact information:

Name of Referrer
Title
Address
Phone
email

USE OF REFERENCES

You will usually be asked for your list of references prior to an interview or just after.  Select the best individuals; you may want to vary the list depending on the position.  As soon as you pass your list to an employer, let your references know that they may receive a call.  Sharing a job description will be most helpful; the reference can put his or her responses into the context of the prospective job.

Most employers will contact your references by telephone.  These individuals will serve an important role as they elaborate on our qualifications or confirm information you have provided.  Be sure to thank them for supporting you in your search for employment.

CONFIRMATION OF GRADUATION

Employers can obtain from UW-Parkside’s Student Records office that your degree was granted and the date received.  Or, you may be asked to have a transcript sent directly to the employer.  Those requests need to be made in writing to Student Records.
