Resume Dos & Don'ts
The following DOS and DONT’S and will assist you as you prepare your resume.
DO:
- Use one page, never more than two; use white or off-white bond paper
- Leave space between sections or headings so readers can read more easily
- Emphasize headings using capital letters, boldface or indentation; avoid italicized text, script and underlined passages
- Use popular non-decorative typefaces; use a font size of 10-14 points and letter-quality printer
- Send ERROR-FREE, PERFECT copies. Check grammar, spelling, and content for accuracy before having multiple copies made
- Use a variety of action verbs
- Customize each resume for the reader
DON’T:
- Use abbreviations except state, degree, GPA, Co., Inc.
- Use horizontal and vertical lines
- Use long-winded, flowery sentences
- Include a whole life history
- Include high school information
- Use the following headings: resume, name, address, phone number
- Date your resume
- Include age, date of birth, marital status, children, health condition, physical description
- Include reason for leaving last job
- Include salary or supervisor’s name
- Send photocopies
- Fold your resume on a line of text
