The University of Wisconsin-Parkside shows the best work from the nation's best print artists at the 21st Parkside National Small Print Exhibition. Starting with an opening reception Jan. 20, and continuing to Feb. 21, 2008,
the show features 100 prints each with no dimension
exceeding 18 inches. Exhibition Director and UW-Parkside Art Professor Doug DeVinny said this year's show continues a trend toward more digital and 3-dimensional prints."There's an increasing use of digital processes that has opened new doors for a lot of printmakers or people who are technologically inclined but don't want to get their hands dirty," DeVinny said. "And a lot of people are doing book art and 3-dimensional kinds of things and that adds a really tasty dimension to what has always been quality work." DeVinny called this year's collection of prints "especially strong" having been selected from more than 900 works submitted by
nearly 350 artists nationwide. The prints selected for purchase by UW-Parkside reflect the national scope of the exhibition with pieces from California, New York, North Carolina, and Texas among those being added to the university's permanent collection. Selected by independent juror Karla Hackenmiller of Ohio University, DeVinny said artists and prints that stand-out to him include a pair of postage stamp-sized pieces called "Monster #1" and "Monster #2" by North Carolina artist Tracie Pouliot which he called "absolutely charming." The color lithographs of Mark Sisson, an Oklahoma artist, are back after several years' absence, and DeVinny noted the return of Utah artist Wayne Kimball whom he called one of the country's best technical lithographers, whose print includes an incongruous likeness of Catbert, the evil human resources director from the Dilbert comics.
For collectors, the Parkside National Small Print Exhibition is a good place to acquire prints. Images of many of pieces can be purchased with a portion of the selling price helping UW-Parkside art scholarships. The exhibition opens with a reception Sunday, Jan. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Communication Arts Gallery. Regular gallery hours are Mondays and Thursdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Thursday, Feb. 21. Admission to the reception & exhibition are free.
