The Pre-Optometry program at UW-Parkside has been designed to outline specific courses that students interested in Optometry School need to take in order to gain acceptance into Optometry programs throughout the United States.
Students wishing to attend Optometry school can obtain ANY undergraduate major, however, the vast majority of students applying to and accepted into professional optometry programs major in some field of Biology or Chemistry.
Minimum course requirements to be considered for acceptance into Optometry school are:
At least:
1 year of Biology (introductory level) with accompanying laboratories
2 years of Chemistry with accompanying laboratories
- 1 year Introductory Chemistry
- 1 year of Organic Chemistry
1 year of Physics (introductory level) with accompanying laboratories
1 semester of Calculus*
1 year of English Literature
Optometry College Admittance Test (OAT)
* Amount of Required mathematics varies depending on individual optometry programs
In addition to these required
courses, the following elective courses are highly recommended: human-related biology,
biochemistry, English literature, speech, history, philosophy, sociology, political science, economics, accounting and
psychology.
