Students "heroes"/SEG Center benefit Racine agency

UW-Parkside students serve as heroes at Family Services

University of Wisconsin-Parkside Marketing Professor Michael T. Manion takes the same view as author Miguel de Cervantes' hero "Don Quixote" that making things better requires a personal commitment.

"Cervantes portrayed Don Quixote as 'spurred on by the conviction that the world needed his immediate presence,'" Manion said. "And I believe my students are inspired by a growing awareness that their communities need their active commitment."

Manion said two of his students, Jose Faz and Olga Garcia, are serving as community heroes through projects sponsored by the Ralph L. Jaeschke Solutions for Economic Growth (SEG) Center.

Faz, a senior majoring in Spanish and marketing, is working with Family Service of Racine (FSR) to promote financial counseling services in Racine's Hispanic community.

"It's great to be able to take what I'm learning about marketing at Parkside and use it to help the Spanish-speaking people in my community," Faz said of his project.

Garcia is a senior marketing major who is using her bi-lingual and bi-cultural talents to help Family Service help the community.

"I understand the cultural differences between the generations in the Hispanic community, and I'm helping promote the value of counseling that addresses those needs to Spanish-speaking families," Garcia said.

Family Service executive director Eric Rautenberg said Faz's and Garcia's bi-lingual promotion skills are helping his not-for-profit agency meet a growing need.

"FSR is committed to serving everyone in need of financial and family counseling in Racine and our Spanish-speaking clientele is growing rapidly," Rautenberg said. "We intend to apply the promotion plans the Parkside students provide to do an even better job in our community."

UW-Parkside School of Business and Technology Dean Fred Ebeid said the Center continues to prove itself a valuable asset for students, the university, and the business community.

"The SEG Center provides UW-Parkside students important hands-on experience they can apply in their chosen career choice," Ebeid said. "Local organizations also benefit from student and faculty support in meeting their respective mission."
