UW-P looks for student help with green campus plan

UW-Parkside accepting student environmental steward applications

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside is accepting applications for three Student Environmental Steward positions open for the 2007-2008 academic year. The stewards will support efforts by the new Chancellor’s Task Force on Environmental Stewardship to help UW-Parkside become the “green” campus in the University of Wisconsin System.

"The Student Environmental Stewards will take the lead in organizing and inspiring student involvement in UW-Parkside's efforts to create a leading-edge environmentally friendly, green campus," said Business Professor Cathy Folker who is working on the initiative with UW-Parkside Geosciences Professor John Skalbeck. "The stewards will be expected to generate environmental interest and enthusiasm among their fellow students."

Stewards will collaborate with an AmeriCorps*VISTA member on the Environmental Education Campaign. This includes development of the Center for Environmental Education, Demonstration, and Applied Research in Kenosha and Racine's Root River Environmental Education and Community Center.

The stewards also will lead the on-campus fundraising effort to install solar power panels. The university received a $100,000 grant from We Energies and must raise matching funds. A $10,000 donation has already been made to help match the grant money. They also will help create signage about current UW-Parkside environmental efforts.

Along with opportunities to acquire leadership and organizing skills and the chance to play a vital role in shaping UW-Parkside’s environmental campaign, each Student Environmental Steward receives up to $1,000 in hourly compensation during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Potential stewards can submit a one-page description of their interest and involvement in environmental activities as well as previous leadership skills and experience along with name, address, phone number, and email address. Send this information to Chancellor’s Task Force on Environmental Stewardship, c/o Tom Schnaubelt, Center for Community Partnerships, P.O. Box 2000, Kenosha, WI, 53141-2000. For more information, call (262) 595-3340 or access thomas.schnaubelt@uwp.edu by email. The application deadline is Aug. 3, 2007. Individuals selected to participate are notified by Sept. 15, 2007.
