Four UW-Parkside students gain major scholarships

UW-Parkside students receive 2007-08 Sentry Insurance scholarships

Four University of Wisconsin-Parkside students have received Student Leadership Scholarships from the Sentry Insurance Foundation, Inc. The students, Kevin Heapes and Janell Topczewski of Racine, Amber Eckert of Muskego, and Matthew Gloshen from Traverse City, Mich., each received the $2,500 award for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Created to help students majoring in business administration, computer science, accounting, finance, or mathematics, scholarship eligibility is restricted to students who place in the top 15 percent of their high school graduating class.

"This program offers the University of Wisconsin-Parkside the opportunity to reach out to the best and the brightest," said Sentry Insurance Foundation Vice President and Executive Director Peg Sullivan. "We are glad to be a partner with [UW-Parkside] in providing an opportunity for young people to achieve their educational goals."

In addition to being at the top of their class, Sentry Insurance Student Leadership Scholarship recipients must have a significant record of extra curricular and community activities indicating outstanding leadership potential. The scholarships can be renewed for up to four years if the recipients maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale and continue to pursue a degree in one of the targeted areas of study.

Heapes, a computer science major, and Gloshen, who is majoring in business, successfully renewed their scholarships this year. Topczewski and Eckert are incoming freshmen who will study business and accounting, respectively.

The Sentry Insurance Foundation, Inc., is the philanthropic arm of Sentry Insurance, headquartered in Stevens Point. UW-Parkside is one of 11 universities whose students benefit from the company's continuing support of higher education.
