Campus offers prayers and condolences to NIU
Unfortunately, members of the UW-Parkside campus community must once again express feelings of sorrow and great sympathy to colleagues and fellow students - this time at Northern Illinois University.
The tragedy that occurred there last Thursday is beyond belief. To the victims, and their friends and family members we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers and hope you can take some comfort in knowing you have the support of so many.
The events last week remind us all that any college or university is vulnerable to such horror because the very nature of such institutions is that of open and welcoming environments.
UW-Parkside is no exception.
We will continue to take all reasonable measures to prevent and to react to any tragic situation. As I stated after the terrible incidents at Virginia Tech, our police are academy trained, and as part of their development they are routinely exposed to these types of scenarios.
Our administration participates twice a year in tabletop simulations of disasters that can affect a campus. We will communicate with the campus if any serious event occurs. We will use our dedicated speak system and computer communication methods, as appropriate, to alert the campus.
Again, we express our sympathy to the Northern Illinois community and pray
that our campus will continue to remain a safe and secure environment.
Jack Keating, Chancellor
