Showcase: Find out what (research) we're up to
UW-Parkside presents student research at 'Showcase' April 17
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside highlights the research, creative activity, and community engagement efforts of its students and faculty during Student Showcase 2008. Modeled after the University of Wisconsin System's Posters in the Rotunda program at the capitol building in Madison, the showcase is Thursday, April 17, 2008, on campus.
During the program, more than three dozen projects are featured. These include oral presentations in which students present their research findings on a variety subjects as well as three artistic presentations. Showcase attendees also have the opportunity to view 30 poster presentations depicting students' findings and talk with students and faculty who conducted the research.
UW-Parkside Dean of Community Engagement and Civic Learning Tom Schnaubelt said this event allows students to present their work to live audiences.
"One of the most important features of any serious scholarly effort is making it available to the public and peers. The Student Showcase provides students with the opportunity to take that step," Schnaubelt said.
"Participating in last year's Student Showcase was a path-changing event for me," said UW-Parkside student Mary Pirrello. "The experience changed my plans from just pursuing a bachelor's degree and looking for work, to pursuing a higher degree and someday teaching at the university level."
Pirrello recently presented her research at the Midwest Sociological Conference and is preparing her findings for publication. She will present her work to a class at LoyolaUniversity during fall semester.
The Student Showcase begins with the opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the Galbraith Room (Wyllie Hall 363) featuring keynote speaker Dr. David Hale. Dr. Hale is a Professor of Management Information Systems at the University of Alabama and a UW-Parkside graduate. The oral and artistic presentations begin at noon also in Wyllie 363. Posters are shown starting at 1:30 p.m. in Main Place near the UW-Parkside Library. During the poster session, UW-Parkside music majors will perform and possibly a preview of Parkside Theatre's upcoming production of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth."
