UW-P Professor examines "Japan's Motorcycle Wars"
UW-Parkside program examines Japan's motorcycle history
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside offers motorcycle enthusiasts and those interested in business history an in-depth look inside Japan's crowded transportation juggernaut. Based on his newly published book "Japan's Motorcycle Wars: An Industry History," UW-Parkside History Professor Jeffrey Alexander offers his historical and business insights Friday, April 25, at 3 p.m. in room 247 of the UW-Parkside Library lounge.
During the program, Alexander examines the explosive growth of Japan's motorcycle industry during the early 1950s when the number of manufacturers swelled to more than 200. Using transcripts, industry publications, and company histories that have until now been available only in Japanese, Alexander chronicles an industry beset by misplaced loyalties and technical disasters, and marketplace victors forged from brutal competition.
"I've written this book not only for Japan specialists and those interested in business history, but also for those simply interested in Japan or in the motorcycle industry," Alexander stated.
Professor Alexander recently lectured about the book at UW-Madison's East AsiaStudiesCenter. He has also been invited to lecture at HarvardUniversity's Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies.
"Japan's Motorcycle Wars: An Industry History" with UW-Parkside History Professor Jeffrey Alexander is part of the International Studies Global Lunch Hour series and is co-hosted by the UW-Parkside History Department. The program is free and open to the public.
