Job Essentials workshop “essentially successful”
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Student Center Ballroom served as a classroom for job seekers on Saturday, Jan. 31. Nearly 90 people interested in upgrading their skills filled the room during the Job Search Essentials Workshop. In collaboration with a number of local agencies, the university provided the venue and the employment expertise to help those who are unemployed or thinking about changing career understand what goes into a successful job search.
UW-Parkside Business Professor Sue Norton, who specializes in Human Resources, led three sessions on methods for landing a job or for improving a career. Norton's focus was on preparing people to succeed in a job market that has changed dramatically in recent years.
"What we wanted to do was help people who may not be familiar with the nature of searching for a job in 2009, to get them up to speed," Norton said. "Changes in technology and the importance of effective networking make looking for a job now much different than it was a decade ago."
Norton started the morning with a segment titled "Tapping the Hidden Job Market." She shared with participants ways to find potential employment as well as information on the hottest career fields. Later in the morning, Norton discussed the preparation and use of resumes in the job search and the program closed with the do's and don'ts of job interviewing.
Along with the UW-Parkside School of Business and Technology and Center for Community Partnerships, the efforts of the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Kenosha County Division of Workforce Development and Veterans Service Office made the workshop possible.
Norton noted she received excellent support from the UW-Parkside Career Center while she prepared for the workshop, "which meant I had much to offer the participants," she added.
The UW-Parkside Advising Center also assisted with the workshop.
