Faculty provides ongoing support and guidance for students developing academic plans, as well as, pursuing professional designations and certifications. Completion of the Business major with the Accounting concentration is a comprehensive program that enables students to gain a competitive edge in today’s modern job market.

What is Accounting?

Often described as “the language of business” accounting is the effective management of the financial affairs of a business entity. The three main fields of accounting are public, private, and governmental accounting. The accountant's role in society has evolved from a mere record keeper to that of a fundamental member of the financial strategic team. The skills learned as an accounting major at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside give students the opportunity to specialize in auditing, tax, consulting, accounting information systems or other emerging areas of accounting. The global demand for qualified accounting professionals is at its peak and the work accountants perform has never been more varied.

Career Opportunities in Accounting

The dynamic field of accounting provides students with various job opportunities within the field. Whether you choose a career in public, private, or governmental accounting, a degree in accounting will provide you with a career that is intellectually stimulating and interesting. Within private accounting students can pursue a career in either the manufacturing or service sectors. Students interested in public accounting can choose to work for larger international firms or smaller regional firms; and students in governmental accounting can work within state or federal governmental agencies. Our accounting majors have many internship opportunities that help prepare them for work in virtually any area of business allowing them the luxury of career mobility. Employers want to hire quality personnel and they often hire accounting majors because of their dedication to excellence and hard work. A career in accounting can be both intellectually and financially rewarding. Although most prospective employers do not require the professional Certified Public Accountant designation, it is generally preferred and employers frequently offer incentives for successful completion of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. Recruiters visit our campus each year and the School of Business & Technology invites prospective employers to participate in various job fairs throughout the year.
