Finance

Concentration in Finance

The Finance concentration is designed for business students who wish to pursue a career involving money and capital markets, investments or financial management. Courses focus on securities markets and financial institutions; individual and institutional investors; and managerial decisions made within firms. The curriculum provides hands-on instruction such as student stock investment projects; banking simulation experiences; and corporate financial analysis.

 

Concentration in Finance Requirements

FIN 431 Advanced Managerial Finance (3 cr)

And two courses from:

FIN 332 Working Capital Management

FIN 437 International Financial Management
ACCT 301 Intermediate Accounting I
ECON 366 Money and Banking

At least one of the elective courses must be from FIN 332, 433, 435, or 437.

Dr. Fred Ebeid is the dean of the School of Business and Technology at the University of Wisconsin – Parkside.  Previously he was dean of the College of Business and Technology at Western Illinois University, where he also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in financial management, investments, and personal financial planning.  Dr. Ebeid has been extensively involved in developing international programs for graduate and undergraduate students, and has received a number significant awards and honors.  His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University at Detroit, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan at Dearborn, and an Associate in Commerce degree from Henry Ford Community College at Dearborn.  Prior to his employment in higher education, Fred worked for General Motors Corporation, Cadillac Motor Car Division, in accounting and financial analysis.

Ebeid has presented his research at regional, national, and international professional conferences, published articles on financial and international topics, reviewed and contributed to existing and proposed finance textbooks, and provided financial consulting services.  He has also served as a Board Member and President for the Academy of Finance, a member of the advisory board of the Midwest Business Administration Association, President of Phi Kappa Phi, and member of the Illinois State Universities Retirement System Advisory Committee.  Dr. Ebeid is listed in Who’s Who in Finance and Business (2006-2007), Who’s Who in American Education (2005-2006 and 2006-2007), Who’s Who in America (2004 and 2005), Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (2004, 2005, and 2006), Academic Keys Who’s Who in Business Higher Education (2003), and Who's Who in Finance in Industry (1999). 

Fred's research has appeared in the International Business & Economics Research Journal, Journal of the Academy of Finance, The Journal of Language for International Business, Journal of Contemporary Business Issues, American Business Review, University of Michigan Business Review, Mergers and Acquisitions - The Journal of Corporate Venture, The Journal of Finance, Midwest Review of Finance and Insurance, New Enterprise Management, and numerous international, national and regional proceedings.  He has designed and implemented international travel/study programs to Europe and Canada for students and active and in the development of international exchange programs and consortia designed to promote faculty collaboration among universities in Russia, France, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.  Fred's international interest extends to Rotary International where he served as Youth Exchange Officer for the Macomb Rotary Club of Illinois from 1999 to 2002, working with host families and inbound and outbound students. For his distinguished service, he was recognized with Rotary’s prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award in 2002.

Area of Expertise: Professor Fok's teaching interests are corporate finance and financial institutions. His research interests are well diversified, including initial public offerings, efficiency of financial institutions, and banking relationship.

Professional Activities: Professor Fok held faculty positions at Feng Chia University (Taiwan), National Chung Cheng University (Taiwan) and Shippensburg University (Pennsylvania) before joining UW-Parkside. He is a member of American Finance Association, Financial Management Association International, Eastern Finance Association, and Midwest Finance Association. He has published in a wide variety of academic journals including Financial Management, Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of Real Estate Research, Journal of Business Finance & and Accounting, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Consumer Marketing, Journal of Financial Education, and Financial Practice and Education. He was listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2003-2004.

 

Patrick Stegman, M.S., MBA Patrick Stegman, MBA

Area of Expertise: Mr. Stegman has worked in many capacities in both the private and public sector. During his military service, Mr. Stegman served as an instructor in the Air Force flight training programs, his initial experience as a teacher. He later served as the cost/financial manager for the F-22 program, responsible for planning, developing, and documenting life cycle cost estimates for the $62 billion program. As the Director of Titan Launch Vehicle Program Operations, he led a staff of 48 responsible for financial and information management for the $38.8 billion Titan space programs. His office planned and implemented annual budgets exceeding $1 billion while coordinating strategic planning for multibillion dollar contract modifications and additional vehicle buys. Mr. Stegman supervised critical program reports and personally briefed senior Air Force and Department of Defense officials and Congressional staffs. Mr. Stegman has also worked in the private sector as the Controller for Boeing Technology Services, a subsidiary of The Boeing Company, where he directed and managed the accounting and finance functions. Finally, Mr. Stegman owned and published The Independent Investor, a bi-monthly economic, financial, and investment newsletter.

Professional Activities: Mr. Stegman is a member of the Financial Planning Association, the American Association of Individual Investors, and the National Association of Investors Corporation. He has consulted with Investment Clubs and serves annually as a Nicholson Judge for Better Investing magazine, assisting in the selection of high quality annual reports. Mr. Stegman is an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s fund raising activities.

Area of Expertise: Dr. Wright has done extensive research in the field of bonds, with special emphasis on bond indices and their implications for fixed-income portfolio performance measurement.

Professional Activities: Dr. Wright teaches investments, working capital management, and corporate finance. Previously, he was a faculty member at the University of Notre Dame in the College of Business and the Graduate School of Business, Indiana University, Bloomington. Dr. Wright has recently published articles concerning common stock price behavior, including topics on mutual fund pricing, empirical durations of common stocks, and small cap stock indices. He has been a frequent speaker at both academic and investment conferences.
