Abstract Submission Instructions & Guide
Students must complete and submit the Abstract Submission Form on or before Friday, March 13, 2009.
Students are expected to review abstracts with a faculty/staff sponsor and obtain approval to list this person (or persons) as your sponsor. Submissions will not be accepted without the approval of a faculty/staff sponsor.
Please make sure you complete the entire form. This includes:
- Making sure to include a current and well-monitored email address. We will most likely use this form of communication to send information about the Showcase.
- Indicating the type of presentation you would like to have, audio-visual needs, and contact information for your faculty/staff sponsor.
- Indicating when you will be available on April 17th. Obviously, we want you to avoid missing class. Please indicate all times at which you are available - we'll try to accommodate you as best as possible. Please check with your faculty/staff sponsor for their availability as well.
- Optional: If you would like UWP to send a letter to your parents, a mentor, or a friend informing them that you'll be presenting at the Showcase, please include their name and address.
Abstract Preparation Guide
Please note that abstracts may vary depending on your discipline and the type of presentation/performance that you are submitting. Please consult with your faculty/staff sponsor for guidance on how to best prepare an abstract. The following is adapted from the UW System Symposium and can be used as a general guide for developing an abstract.
- Title. No more than 7 important words, the title should inform the reader about content and stimulate interest in the presentation. (Think: newspaper headline).
- Background and Rationale (1-2 sentences). Provide some background and a rationale for the study. What does your reader need before they can understand why you performed this scholarship/creative activity? Set the stage for further information on the topic.
- Methods (1-2 sentences). Provide methods for how you accomplished your goals. How did you perform the study? What methods did you use to achieve your results? Check that your methods match the upcoming results.
- Results (2-3 sentences). Choose your most significant findings and describe them. What did you accomplish? What is most important for your peers to know about your work? Share the critical findings only.
- Conclusions (1-2 sentences). Interpret your results for a broader audience. What can you conclude from your study? How do your results impact larger issues? Make sure your conclusions are supported by your results.
Again, abstracts for performances, creative activity, internships, and community-based learning projects may use different formats for abstracts. Please consult with your faculty/staff sponsor to discuss what might be most appropriate.
What Happens Next?
Once you have submitted your abstract, the organizing committee will review the submissions. Once a decision has been made, you and your faculty/staff sponsor will be contacted to confirm the time, place, and audio/visual needs for your presentation/performance/exhibit. Please support your colleagues by attending other presentations throughout the day (check the schedule for more specific details as we approach April 28th).
