- Endowment Agreement
A CS 2100 Endowment agreement in the amount of $103,000 was signed in August 2007 by Rick Gorton, a CS alumnus. This endowment is intended for funding enhancements in the Computer Science department. The funds that are annually generated by the three-year pledge may be utilized for scholarships, software and hardware needs, research funds, or other needs as determined by the faculty of the department. - The 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge
News from Dale Frampton: Oskosh Truck has officially announced that we were awarded a contract by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to compete in the 2007 DARPA Urban Grand Challenge. Oshkosh Truck was one of only a few teams to complete the 2005 course that covered 140 miles of desert terrain. Here is a link to DARPA's website regarding the 2005 race: http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge05/index.html.This year the competition is to build a vehicle that is able to navigate in an urban environment, with traffic, and complete a 60 mile course. I am working on the vehicle's overall high-level software architecture, UML modeling of the drive by wire interfaces and operations and writing supporting software that includes integrating with the GPS system. Oshkosh Truck's team website is at http://www.terramax.com. The site has pictures from last year, but only the picture on the main page is of this year's truck.
- The Norville and Betty Kent Scholarhip in Computer Science
Karen Kent, a 1993 CS graduate, made a promise when she was awarded a scholarship in the early 1990s to provide a scholarship to UWP 20 years after graduation. Karen did not wait that long to establish this scholarship in honor of her parents. The scholarship is in the amount of $2000 per year to a single recipient based on academic achievement. The reciepient can be a freshman or a continuing student, but must be a declared CS major. Karen has committed to offering this scholarship for several years. - Wireless Access Point Installed in Lab
Thanks to the generosity of Rick Gorton, a 1984 CS graduate, with a donation of $2000 and a $500 donation from the local Harborfest board (Rich Torine, a member and CS graduate) the computer science department lab now has a wireless access point that can service the whole lab area and the adjoining SEG Center. The students greatly appreciate being able to use their own laptops from the conference table or workstation islands anywhere in the lab. - Please send your information so that it can be added to our database and others can have access to it.
- Please send any news regarding CS activities for alumni.
