    Certificate Program in UNIX System Administration

    Computer systems based on the UNIX operating system are being used increasingly in business and industry as network, database, web and email servers and also as high-end workstations. While the UNIX operating system runs on a wide variety of computer architectures--from PCs to mainframes, UNIX system administration is relatively complex compared to administration of single-user systems such as Windows and MacOS workstations. Beginners find it difficult to implement and maintain complex network connectivity, domain name service, database engines, time service, mail handling, printer service, network file service, and system backup. Moreover, there are a number of security problems that can plague a beginning UNIX system administrator and that can result in serious damage to system integrity and loss of services.

    This certificate program will introduce the concepts and details necessary to understand the software and hardware components of a UNIX-based system and how these components interact to provide system services. It will also give hands-on experience in installing, configuring, running, and maintaining a UNIX system, as well as implementing security and safety measures. It is suitable for persons who currently administer UNIX systems and/or who wish to gain additional knowledge and experience to equip themselves better to keep up with complex UNIX system administration tasks.

    Goal

    The goal of this certificate program is to provide working computer professionals as well as hobbyists with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to administer a UNIX system in a networked environment.

    A certificate will be granted to those participants who have successfully completed the required course work and who can:

    • show, through hands-on demonstration, that they can install and configure a bare system from CD-ROM distribution media to a fully-configured, running, networked system.
    • demonstrate, through written examination(s), that they understand system administration terminology, that they know the location and purpose of system configuration files, that they know the location of system documentation, that they understand the architecture of the UNIX system, and that they understand how peripheral devices are attached to the system.
    • demonstrate, through a structured practicum, that they can react appropriately to system failures, that they can attach and reconfigure hardware devices, and that they can carry out routine system administration activities.

    Program Description

    This certificate program consists of three courses
    • Introduction to Computer Science I (CSCI 241)
    • UNIX Concepts and Tools (CSCI 275)
    • UNIX System Administration (CSCI 375)
    Participants in the certificate program who can demonstrate fluency in programming may be waived from taking the CSCI 241 course. Fluency will be based on equivalent courses taken at other institutions or on documented relevant programming experience.

    CSCI 145 or 241: Introduction to Computer Science I

    5 -4 cr.
    Organization and characteristics of computers, algorithms and programs, fundamentals of programming in a high-level language.
    Prereq: Previous programming experience; MATH 221 or conc. reg; Freq: Fall, Spring

    This is our first course in the computer science program. UNIX system administrators need to know programming concepts in order to make configuration changes to programs they will install. It is taught by computer science faculty.

    CSCI 275: UNIX Concepts and Tools

    2 cr.
    Concepts and tools for UNIX including file system organization, directory and file manipulation, editors, text formatting software, filters, text processing systems, makefiles, and shell scripting.
    Prereq: CSCI 241 or equivalent programming experience; Freq: Fall

    This course will give participants basic knowledge of the architecture of the UNIX operating system and the tools available to UNIX users.

    CSCI 375: UNIX System Administration

    3 cr.
    UNIX System administration concepts and techniques including system organization, kernel configuration, device management, system files and runtime maintenance, software configuration and installation, and network configuration; comparison of UNIX with other operating systems. Laboratory work included.
    Prereq: CSCI 275 or equivalent; Freq: Spring

    This course is the capstone of the system administration certificate program. Participants will be expected to apply their knowledge to hands-on system administration activities, and will be expected to demonstrate their proficiency in a practical setting.
