Master of Science in Computer and Information Systems

The Master of Science in Computer and Information Systems (MSCIS) is a graduate degree program offered by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Master of Science in Computer and Information Systems - CIS is an interdisciplinary program which combines technology and business application skills to enable students to apply their experiences to global applications. Our students complete tangible projects which benefit the local communities as part of their learning experience. The graduate program draws on the strengths of UW-Parkside’s faculty and computing resources in both computer science (CS) and management information systems (MIS).

The information below is correct for the 2009-2011 CIS program.

Audience

The MSCIS program is beneficial to those who wish to enter the information systems field, as well as those currently in the field who would like to expand their expertise. The MSCIS program is entirely course-based, a thesis or research project is optional.

Entrance Requirements

To be considered for admission into the MSCIS program, an application must:

  1. Have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with an undergraduate GPA (UGPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.
  2. Submit GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination) exam scores.
  3. Submit an online application form along with a letter of application outlining your professional goals.
  4. Have two people submit letters of recommendation in your behalf indicating promise for your success in graduate studies.
  5. International students whose native language is not English are required to provide evidence of English language competence, normally by presenting a satisfactory score on the TOEFL exam.

At the discretion of the program faculty, students with minor deficiencies in items 1 and 2 may be conditionally accepted into the MSCIS program if they can otherwise demonstrate significant potential for success.

Admissions

  1. A completed on-line Graduate Student Application Form.
  2. Application fee payment.
  3. GRE or GMAT scores and official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work sent directly to the Computer Science Department office.
  4. Letter of application.
  5. Two letters of recommendation sent directly to the Computer Science Department office.
  6. International students must also submit a sponsorship form, a transcript evaluation, and evidence of English proficiency.
  7. Additional materials in support of the applicant, as appropriate.

An application is only considered complete when all of the above materials have been received.

Prerequisites

0-22 credits, depending on background:

Classes may be waived with a grade of C or better in an undergraduate or graduate equivalent course, except for programming proficiency whose placement is determined from the results of the placement exam.

All prerequisite courses may be completed in one Fall semester at UW-Parkside. Courses in Data Communications and Database Management are only offered in the Fall, while other prerequisite courses may be taken in Fall or Spring.

The MSCIS Curriculum

The program requires thirty-three (33) credits of graduate study. Detailed course descriptions can be found in the course catalog. A "B average" must be maintained in this coursework to satisfy the degree requirements.

The MSCIS curriculum includes a minimum of nineteen (19) credits of Core Requirements. Students must complete the specified credits required in each area. A course cannot be used to satisfy the requirements in more than one category.

Students then complete an additional nine (9) credit hours in a track, to complete a concentration.
