Specific Procedures for testing accommodations:
- Meet with DS Coordinator to request test-taking accommodations, verify eligibility.
- Receive a letter of verification for students to disseminate to instructor(s) during their respective office hours.
Student must then notify the DS Coordinator of the following:
- Three working days before exams or quizzes.
- Seven working days before exam, if a test(s) must be converted to an alternative format (i.e., Braille, large print, etc.).
- Seven working days before classes, when scribes or readers are needed.
- Seven working days before all final exams.
Note-Taking Accommodations
Specific Procedures for testing accommodations:
- Meet with DS Coordinator to request test-taking accommodations, verify eligibility.
- Receive a letter of verification for students to disseminate to instructor(s) during their respective office hours.
Student must then notify the DS Coordinator of the following:
If necessary, ask instructor during the beginning of class that a note taker is needed and refer peer note taker to DS for application process i.e., responsibilities and compensation.
Secure note-taking paper and review one or two sets of notes with instructor to ensure that notes are complete. Report any problems immediately to DS.
Exchange phone number, email address, etc. with note-taker to maintain communication and to facilitate the receipt of supplemental notes.
Note: Accommodations for other requests (interpreting, real-time captioning, etc.) will be handled on an individual basis as they are received.
Alternative Print Formats and Recorded Textbooks for Students with Disabilities Accomodations
All DS students must provide documentation to DS that supports the need for alternative print or recorded textbooks. Eligible students can access adaptive equipment such as the text-reader and the CCTV for enlarging print in the library.
Specific Procedures for testing accommodations:
- Provide DS Coordinator with a copy of the class syllabus or title, author and edition of course textbook(s).
- Submit the authorization for textbooks and print conversion form to the DS office.
- Check on-line to determine whether the text is in the national archive of recorded texts at Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D). www.rfbd.org/catalog.
- If the recorded text is available from RFB&D students with personal memberships can order the audio/digital recordings directly from RFB&D.
- Students who do not have personal RFB&D membership:
Bring a course syllabus to DS or student should have the title, author, and the edition of the text(s), so DS can see if the text is available from RFB&D. If text is not available from RFB&D, DS will have text read by a volunteer or paid peer.
- All students should be prepared to return all cassette tapes to DS at the end of each semester. All recorded items are property of DS and should student fail to return cassette tapes they may encounter a fine or hold.
Note: readings are provided commensurate with the class reading list or syllabus until RFB&D recordings arrive or if RFB&D does not have the text available on tape. Please expect a two-week turnaround in order to receive tapes from DS or RFB&D.
