The Position Description Form in ADA Format
Position Description in ADA Format Instructions & Template (MS Word Document)
The position description is the basis for the selection of the successful candidate and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is essential that the information on the form is accurate so that if a situation occurs, all parties involved can refer to the document.
It is very important to prepare the position description carefully. It guides the search process at all steps along the way and is a crucial recruitment tool. Before completing the PAR and the position description the following should be reviewed:
- The needs and interests of the department, institution and students. It is important to examine already existing position descriptions to be certain that they are simply not the result of traditional practices but are genuinely job-related and necessary to do the required duties.
- The list of essential job functions, knowledge, abilities and skills—when determining duties and responsibilities avoid defining positions too narrowly (in case there’s a great candidate with a slightly different background or specialty) or too broadly (to avoid getting a lot of unsuitable candidates).
- Qualifications—are specific attributes that are required to perform the position successfully being certain to distinguish between required and preferred characteristics.
- While developing and/or reviewing the position description it is important to focus on the purpose of the function and the result to be accomplished, rather than the manner in which the function is performed—focus should be on what is to be accomplished, not how the job is accomplished.
