  3. Why do I need to turn these documents in if this information is on the FAFSA?

  4. The U.S. Department of Education requires that you comply with our requests for official documents. Failure to submit and return all requested information may result in the cancellation of your student financial aid. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid is required to complete verification prior to certifying student loans and disbursing federal aid.

  11. What is the fastest way to submit my tax information?

  12. The fastest way would be to update your FAFSA application using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The updated FAFSA information will be sent to our office typically within 2-5 business days, whereas requesting a tax transcript can take 5-10 business days. Not all applicants are eligible to use this tool, so to be sure you can, please check the eligibility requirements under "IRS Data Retrieval Tool."

  15. What if my parents/my financial situation have changed since I filed the taxes?

  16. We may be able to re-evaluate your FAFSA application to determine if any changes can be made. Not all circumstances allow for this, and occasionally changes in financial status do not result in a change in eligibility. We recommend stopping in, calling, or emailing our office so that a counselor can discuss your situation and determine the best course of action.

  17. How long does the verification process take to be completed?

  18. The verification processing time varies based upon the time of year, and the number of items we are processing. At peak processing times, verification can take up to 4 weeks, so it is extremely important to turn in any requested documentation as quickly as possible. Verification will also be slowed if submitted documents are incomplete, are missing signatures, or are illegible. We are happy to look over any documents you need to submit to ensure accuracy and completeness.

  19. How do I know who to include in my household size?

  20. In general, you should include anyone that you (in the case of independent students) or your parents (in the case of dependent students) are supporting 50% or more. This can include grandparents, aunts and uncles, grandchildren, etc. The verification worksheets offer detailed descriptions of who may count as number in household.

  21. What happens if I don't turn in the verification documents?

  22. For the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid to process your financial aid, we must receive your completed verification worksheets. That being said, failure to submit your verification worksheets to us will prevent us from awarding you financial aid for the 2012-2013 school year. This could result in unpaid charges, late fees, and an inability to register or request transcripts.

  23. What if my parents don't support me, do I still have to submit their tax documents?

  24. If you are a dependent student, you are required to submit your parent(s) tax information regardless of their tax filing status, the support they give you, or if they are ceasing support for you.

  25. What if my parents are divorced, and I live with my step-parent who doesn't support me? Do I still need to include my step-parent tax information?

  26. Yes, you must submit your step-parent's information on the verification forms and submit copies of their tax information. You should also include your step-parent and any step-siblings as part of your household, and if applicable, number in college.
