What is an FYE Peer Mentor ?
The Peer Mentors are upper-class UW-Parkside students with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher. These students are selected through an application and interview process. They must demonstrate exemplary academic achievement, leadership, and a passion to aid first year students with their transition from high school to college. They are also required to complete a Peer Educator Certification program and attend peer mentor seminars throughout the semester. They serve as role models, advisors, guides, resources, and teacher assistants.
The Peer Mentors serve two populations of First Year Students. They work with students enrolled in the Intro to Critical Thinking Course (ASCK 120), and students who indicate they would like a mentor. Peer Mentors will act as peer advisors to their mentees. They will discuss issues, concerns and/or difficulties their mentee(s) is/are experiencing. Mentors will be responsible for establishing supportive relationships with participating first year students. They will provide resource information and referrals to various campus resources. Peer Mentors provide:
- One-on-One mentoring
- Peer Academic guidance
- Fun Social Events
- Peer perspective on how to develop a positive academic identity
