Minutes of the Facilities Planning Committee
for April 14, 2004
Attendees: Bill Streeter, Chair; Walter Feldt, Marwan Wafa, Jerry Greenfield, Steve McLaughlin, Don Cress, David Holmes, Richard Lott, and Don Kolbe (filling in for vacant Campus Planner), Kate Pietri and Charlotte Short.
1. Planning for Classroom Renovation/Instructional Technology Improvements.
The campus has received an award from UW-System in the amount of $205,000. A plan of how UW-P is going to use this award is due to System by May 6. Kate Pietri explained that the Lab Mod and Lab Renovation group ranks proposals received, and then carries out those projects for which there is funding. Spaces can only be renovated once every five years.
This summer changes are being made in MOLN D139, 211, 213, and 215. Some of the $205,000 award may have to be used to help complete unfinished projects. It was suggested that it may be best to use the money to increase the technology of current spaces, rather than renovating additional spaces .
2. Space Request from Academic Skills
Charlotte Short outlined the proposal from the Academic Skills area. They currently use GRNQ D127 and D125. They are requesting that they also be allowed to schedule courses in GRNQ D123, which currently is used for Theatre Arts courses. They would use their own funds to change GRNQ D123 to a “smart” room. They are also proposing that GRNQ D103/105 could be converted to house the Theatre Arts courses. GRNQ D127 is heavily scheduled, and the addition of GRNQ D123 would allow for additional courses to be scheduled there. A remodeled GRNQ D103/D105 would work well for the Theatre Arts classes that would be held there.
In the absence of a campus planner, Don and Bill will look at the feasibility of this proposal.
3. SEG (Solutions for Economic Growth) Progress in Molinaro Hall.
In order for SEG to be established in MOLN D112 and 114, the labs currently using those rooms will need to be moved to MOLN D129. MOLN D112 will be used as a workroom, and MOLN D114 will be used to discuss projects. It was suggested that available cabinets could serve as a room divider in MOLN D129. Drawings will be done of the spaces.
4. Construction Updates.
Don Kolbe reported that the materials for the Digital Arts area have been ordered. Work will begin on July 12 for the new Animation Studio. The ceiling is to be installed during the week of August 2 nd, with the work stations tentatively being installed the week of August 9th.
The Mailroom has moved, and the Media move should be completed within the next 3-4 weeks. The costume shop should be moved into the current Media area in June.
Funding has been received for the installation of 23+ emergency phones. These phones use radio technology and will be installed on existing light poles. Additionally, new emergency phones will be installed in elevators over the summer. It was suggested that stickers should be provided for campus phones indicating that the number to call in case of emergency is 2911.
The UW-P sign on Sheridan Road (just south of County Road A) has been stolen. Bill Streeter has checked into having it replaced, and the County reports that the sign has been ordered, and will be installed when received.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 PM.
