Meeting Minutes
December 2, 2009

Present:  William Streeter, Chair, Donald Cress, Dean Yohnk, Fred Ebeid, Steve McLaughlin, John Desch, Don Kolbe, Peggy James, Chuck Hiertz, Dennis Rome

Absent:  Daniel Rosenberg

  1. The minutes from the 11/4/09 meeting were corrected to include Dennis Rome as being present for the meeting.

  2. Student Success Center Proposal.  Committee members received the “Student Success Center Space Proposal” document prior to the meeting.  John explained that a cash request in the amount of $107,000 was approved by Chancellor’s Cabinet to start the remodeling for Phase 2 of this proposal (consolidation of Student Support Services, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Upward Bound and Precollege programs in the vacated bookstore space).  Questions were raised regarding the “writing center that includes honors programs, Undergraduate research and general education”.  These are components of a future Phase 3 of the proposal that would be created in the old Advising suite (WYLL L107).  The committee requested that another meeting be scheduled in January, and that DeAnn Possehl be present at that meeting to answer questions about this phase.  An additional concern was raised regarding the need for surge space during the Comm Arts remodel.

  3. Project Updates.  John reported that the bids for the Comm Arts remodel came in low.  The University will be able to keep about 50% of the savings, and this money should cover most of the costs of the moveable equipment provided other major construction problems are not encountered.  The lobby renovation will also be included in the project, if project funds allow.  The chairs of the Fine Arts departments and Dean Cress have met with Lenny Klaver regarding fundraising plans for musical instruments and other needs that cannot be funded by the project.

Financial Aid Conference Room.  This space will be utilized for the Ready Ranger program through 06/30/2010.

Restroom Remodels.  John reported that this project is on track to begin in January.

Don Kolbe reported that the elevator project will also be started in January.  The Small Business Development Center in MOLN D127 will be completed by 01/07/2010.
