PRESENT: Steve Carlson (Chair), Ed Wallen (RSO), Lynn Anderson (Assistant RSO), Paul Mohazzabi, Daphne Pham, Chris Evans, Tsun Mei Chang
BUSINESS:
1. Minutes of May 9, 2003 were approved as submitted.
2. Current Approved User List: There are no changes to the approved user list.
3. Contamination/Compliance Surveys and Status: S. Carlson conducted surveys on August 6, 2003. All survey components were acceptable. Anderson indicated that he would make arrangements to conduct the next scheduled quarterly survey next week.
4. Survey Instrumentation Status: The survey instrument annual calibration check was completed in July at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
5. Isotope Inventory Status: Our updated license, submitted to and approved by the NRC, now reflect our limit of six isotopes and 1curie total licensed material on campus.
6. Waste Storage and Waste Log Status: Anderson stated the waste log is up to date and there has been no changes since August. However, waste currently in storage needs checking of disposal dates to determine what may be removed for conventional disposal following 10 half-lives of decay.
7. Training Status: One faculty member that is on the Current Approved User List has not completed the necessary training. This person will be contacted and reminded of the need to complete the mandatory training.
8. Status of State Licensing: The NRC approved our revised license on June 4, 2003. Effective August 11, 2003, our license is now under the authority of the State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Service (DHFS), Division of Public Health, Radiation Protection Section. The state will charge an annual fee of $1000 for to the license and will assume inspection authority as well.
9. X-Ray Spectrometer Registration: The Geosciences Department has purchased an x-ray spectrometer for measuring metals concentrations in soil samples. The DHFS requires registration of all x-ray producing devices, the cost of which is the responsibility of the Geosciences Department. However, the instrument does not become part of the existing radiation safety program. The mandatory postings have been placed in the area where the instrument is used and all current users have received radiation safety training.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Steven Carlson, Chair, Radiation Safety Committee
