Minutes of the Radiation Safety Committee
Meeting of: May 7, 2009

PRESENT: Steve Carlson (Chair), Jolene Wall, Paul Mohazzabi, Daphne Pham , Tsun Mei Chang, Ed Wallen

ABSENT : George Li

Minutes of November 6, 2008 were approved as submitted.

Contamination/Compliance Surveys and Status : Quarterly surveys were conducted December 18, 2008 and March 27, 2009 No deficiencies were found.

Radionuclide tracking spreadsheet : The spreadsheet is reported to be working as fashioned.

Waste Storage and Waste Log: The waste log is up to date. Containers of decayed waste were removed from the radioactive waste storage area in March.

Training Status: Training is up to date for current users. Classes will continue to be offered to faculty and students at the beginning of each semester. Faculty should contact Carlson if they have students that need training outside the regularly scheduled training dates.

Survey meter status : Survey meters will be taken to UW-Milwaukee in July for annual calibration.

DHS inspection 2/18/09-survey meter violation: The Department of Health Services conducted an unannounced radiation safety program inspection in February. A severity level 4 violation was issued (the lowest level). UWP’s response was to remove the meter from use until it can be calibrated in July.

Other: Daphne Pham will begin using tritium in her lab. Use is pending completion of her graduate student’s thesis.

Wrap up and action plan : There were no ideas requiring follow up.
