The Awards and Ceremonies
Committee met on January 31, 2003 in Molinaro 236. Present were Stuart Hansen,
Trenton Baylor,
Fred Monardi, Zhaohui Li and Cynthia Jensen. Also present were guests Chancellor
Jack Keating and David Bruning. Excused were Bill Streeter, Esther Wilson.
The meeting was called to order by Hansen at 2pm.
Hansen announced that two members, Wei Song and Tom Fournelle, had resigned from the committee. He has contacted the Secretary of the Faculty about replacements. This should take place in shortly since the Secretary of the Faculty realizes this is the busy time of the year for the committee.
Chancellor Keating asked
the committee to approve a special award for long time UW regent and UW-Parkside
friend, Al DeSimone.
Currently no appropriate award exists. It will be given to DeSimone at spring
commencement. The Chancellor also requested
that any ideas for naming the award be passed on to him. The committee gave
unanimous approval to the creation of the award
and to giving it to DeSimone. We will continue to discuss the question of naming
the award and pass along all suggestions.
The Chancellor also shared with the committee preliminary plans for Spring commencement. As last year, there will again be two ceremonies. They will both take place on Sunday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. They will not be divided between Arts and Sciences and Business, however. Students from both groups will be present at both ceremonies. The speaker at the morning ceremony will be Ulyce Paine, President of the Milwaukee Brewers. (Unfortunately, there is a home game that afternoon, and Mr. Payne will not be able to speak at the second ceremony.)
At this point, the Chancellor left the meeting.
David Bruning discussed
with the committee his work in establishing a chapter of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor
Society on campus.
The induction ceremony will be on April 13. Of the 150 students eligible, Bruning
said that 45 had already responded positively and he hopes that there will be
about 100 students by then. Bruning also stated that his long term goal is to
establish a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi at UW-Parkside. The committee heartily
approved of Bruning's efforts and volunteered their time to assist him if he
needs it.
At this point, Bruning
left the meeting.
Cynthia led a discussion
of the scholarship award process. Since Song has resigned, Li has volunteered
to move the the
scholarship evaluation subcommittee. The student files will be ready for review
beginning February 10. The subcommittee will
review all the applicants and meet on Friday, March 7 at 2pm to recommend awards
to the entire committee. This year there is an abbreviated deadline in order
to get award information to the Financial Aids Office in a more timely fashion.
The meeting adjourned at 2:50pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Stuart Hansen
