Minutes of the Awards and Ceremonies Committee
for October 13, 2003

The Awards and Ceremonies Committee met at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13 2003 in Moln 136.

Present were Stuart Hansen, Zhaoyi (George) Li, Trenton Baylor, Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes, Tsun-Mei (Alice) Chang,
Esther Wilson, Steve McLaughlin and Cynthia Jensen (ex officio).

Excused: Fred Monardi

Guests: Rebecca Martin, Provost

At the request of the Secretary of the Faculty, the meeting was convened by Stuart Hansen. Hansen was elected chair.

Provost Martin presented the Chancellor's choice for a speaker at May commencement, J. Herman Blake. A brief biography of Dr. Blake was distributed. It is available on-line at: http://web2.iastate.edu/ aastudies/profile_j-herman-blake.cfm.
She requested the committee, as representatives of the faculty, approve Dr. Blake as commencement speaker and approve awarding an Honorary Doctorate to him at the ceremony. The commitee unanimously approved both requests.
