Minutes of the Academic Policies Committee
for September 25, 2003

In attendance: Fay Akindes, Norman Cloutier, Laura Gellott, Michael Gurtman, Paul Mohazzabi, Richard Lott. Excused: Sue Norton, Bryan Lewis, Mary Power, Jerry Greenfield. We have as yet no student rep.

Laura Gellott agreed to serve as chair for 2003-04.

The committee reviewed and approved the informational report being submitted to the Senate on last year’s committee’s work.

The committee reviewed the proposed “Academic Forgiveness Policy,” as a substitute for the one now in force, and re-submitted it to the Faculty Senate for consideration at the October 14 meeting. (This item was tabled at the March 28 meeting of the Senate)..

New Business: PSF 57/91-92, Collegiate Skills, still remains on the books (see http://uwp.edu/staff/gov/senate/psf9192/psf57.cfm). This came to light when the issue was brought to the attention of the University Committee that UW-Parkside still states, both in this policy and in a scaled down version of it on p. 29 of the current catalog. The latter states that students must complete English 101 and Math 111 or 102 by 60 credits. This is not being enforced.

The committee agreed that the outdated PSF 57/92-92 should be brought in line with present realities. Richard Lott reported that the enforcement issue may be able to be dealt with through new prerequisite checking features on PeopleSoft SIS. He will report back to us on that. Laura Gellott agreed to bring a revision of PSF 91-92 that looks more like catalog p. 29, to the next meeting (or to submit same by e-mail to the committee).

No date was set for the next meeting.
