Minutes of the Academic Policies Committee
for November 20, 1998

The Academic Policies Committee met Friday, Nov. 20, 1998 in CA 279. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 P.M. by E. Zepp, Chair. Also attending were M. Gurtman, S. Johnson, P. Lyter, D. Olsen, members and Tonya Hanson, guest.

1) The minutes of Nov. 13, 1998 were approved as written.

2) Old business:

a) Forgiveness Policy:
The committee was asked to deal with two major issues--1) the length of time in the current forgiveness policy and its requirement that a student not have been enrolled in college and 2) the question of including all grades in the computation of Honors. The current policy (which was not explicit on this, except in its explanatory section) included ALL grades in the computation of Honors.
Actions of the committee were:

--Moved by D. Olsen and seconded by S. Johnson: Amend policy: "To be eligible for Academic Forgiveness, a student must not have been enrolled at any institution of higher education from which credits will be accepted for at least 5 continuous years before being admitted/readmitted to UW-Parkside."
Five years will be changed to three years.
Motion was approved 5-0.

--Moved by D. Olsen and seconded by S. Johnson: Add to policy: "Academic forgiveness may be applied to coursework which was completed five or more years ago regardless of whether the student has or has not been attending college within the past five years."
Motion was approved 4-1.

--Moved by D. Olsen and seconded by P. Lyter: Add to policy: "Courses excluded from the satisfaction of graduation requirements under the forgiveness policy will not be included in the calculation of the G.P.A. for graduation or for Honors.
Motion approved 5-0.

-- Revised policy as drawn up by Sue Johnson will accompany minutes to Secr. of Faculty and will be distributed to committee members at the next meeting.

b) Grade Appeal Policy
The steps in a revised grade appeal policy approved in principle on 11/20 were drafted by the Chair after the meeting. A majority of members had approved the draft by Monday afternoon 11/23, through e-mail.

The revised policy as drawn up by the Chair will accompany minutes to the SEcr. of the Faculty and will be distributed to committee members at the next meeting

3) New business:
Discussion of the Forgiveness Policy opened up considerations on the Honors Policy in general. A copy of the policy and a summary of policies at other UW campuses were distributed. Members will review both in view of considering the policy when the committee reconvenes next semester.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:18 P.M.
