Minutes of the Athletic Board
for November 29, 2000

The UW-Parkside Athletic Board Committee met on Wednesday, November 29, 2000, in the Sports & Activity Center conference room. Members present were Canary (chair), James, Letven, Murin, Piazza, and Wright; guests were Linda Draft
and J. Reed from athletics.

Actions Taken

On a motion by Professor Murin, seconded by Professor Wright, the Board approved the facilities policies and procedures and referred any problems with implementation to the facilities use committee created under those policies, with the understanding that the Board will review implementation again at its next to last meeting of Spring 2001.

The Board agreed to meet at the same time next semester and to set its meeting schedule [Jan. 31, Feb. 28, March 28, April 25] in advance.

Matters Discussed

The meeting was devoted to discussing the facilities policies and procedures for the Sports & Activities Center.

Much of the discussion centered on access issues. The building is so designed that access to the building through either the north or south doors gives access to those areas which must be revenue producing to finance the new addition. Students have automatic access with their Ranger cards, but once the doors are regularly staffed, non-students (including faculty and staff) will have to check in. Those attending meetings or athletic events in the building will be able to come in, and there will be an effort to accomodate those showing around prospective students. Thirty minute guest passes are available, and off-campus
visitors can also purchase (up to 3 times a year) one-time guest passes for five dollars. Special accomodation beyond that for off-campus friends attending intramural events can not be provided without essentially giving up any effort to control off-campus users; such accomodation is not provided at other campuses in our conference or in the UW System.

Faculty and staff could not be given free access to the facilities without it being charged as a taxable benefit. Their fees are lower than for outside users. The institution is also bound by state policy not to compete unfairly with local for-profit fitness centers.

The new building is not really complete at this time. The checkers have not yet been hired and trained. We need an additional $13,500 for clocks. The signage is not ready yet. Parking meters are waiting a larger state contract decision--in the meantime, parking passes will be available at the facilty so people don't have to drive down to Tallent. The pool will be closed for renovation starting Dec. 18th--it is supposed to be ready for use by the beginning of second semester.

Respectfully submitted,
Bob Canary, Chair
